On 29th January Bangladesh Health Watch hosted a Facebook Live on the importance of reducing salt intake to promote better public health awareness. The webinar was graced by the experts Dr. Malay Kranti Mridha, Professor at BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, and Dr. Abu Jamil Faisel, a public health expert and working group member of Bangladesh Health Watch. The webinar aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of excessive salt consumption and discuss how to reduce intake by the common people.
Dr. Malay Kranti Mridha highlighted the correlation between high salt consumption and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. He emphasized the need for dietary changes to mitigate these health risks.
Dr Malay also discussed research findings indicating that the average salt intake in Bangladesh far exceeds the WHO-recommended limit of 5 grams per day. Both the discussants underscored the urgent need for awareness campaigns to encourage healthier eating habits.
